Affect of Social Media on Social Connectedness and Pragmatics
We are students at California State University, Sacramento, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. You are invited to participate in a research study about the effect that social media has on the social connectedness and pragmatic skills of individuals. This project asks the integral question, “Does being conscious of social media’s possible effects make someone better at limiting its effects on their social behavior?” Looking at adults, who are believed to be more likely than kids to understand the importance of self-control and critical consumption of social media, this project tries to make sense of whether that consciousness makes adults less likely to have their pragmatic skills and social well-being influenced.
If you volunteer, you will be asked to answer questions based on your personal experiences with and perception of social media and its influence on your life. This will take about 5-7 minutes. You may stop at any time and there will be no penalty.
If you agree to participate, you can stop at any time. This study may expose you to minor risks, but they are not expected to be any greater than risks you experience in daily life. The benefit(s) to this research are being more mindful of your social media habits and the influence it has on your life, as well as identifying characteristics of social media’s influence that may have gone unnoticed otherwise.
We are not collecting information that can identify you. The anonymous data will be kept in a secure location and may be used for other research studies. We will destroy the data after the study ends. We will present this data at the Communication Sciences and Disorders Undergraduate Research Symposium, and perhaps at other local, state, or national conferences.
